Welcome to the FACE trade stand.

About FACE
In September 2001, the work of the NFU's Education Millennium Trust was merged with the Food and Farming Education Service, managed by the Royal Agricultural Society of England, to form Farming and Countryside Education.

Our aim is to help young people learn more about food and farming in a sustainable countryside. Those aims are promoted through the four key areas of activity outlined below.

We welcome applications for membership from organisations with similar aims and objectives who wish to work in partnership.

"We hope that more industry bodies will join the FACE initiative
and help make a real impact on information provided to schools."
(Policy Commission Report on Farming and Food, January 2002)

Enhancing the school curriculum

FACE administers a "one-stop" enquiry service for pupils and teachers. It plans to update the Learning Directory of Food, Farming and Countryside Resources that has proved so popular with teachers and to make it available on-line. A distribution service operates for members' materials and this is free to teachers and pupils. By keeping abreast of curriculum developments, FACE aims to ensure students receive relevant, up to date, accurate and balanced information. Where a gap is identified in the provision of curriculum materials, FACE plans to broker good quality resources.

Visits to farms and horticulture units

Through its field team of eight regional consultants, each of whom has a background in education,
FACE offers workshops and seminars for teachers and farmers to encourage co-operative working. Support and advice is provided for farmers new to the concept of school visits. Similarly, teachers are made aware of the wide range of curriculum opportunities available through such a visit. Each member of the field team has a thorough knowledge of a particular area of the country and can signpost to many different initiatives and individuals working in the sector of agricultural and horticultural education.

Improving the service to schools

FACE ensures a continuous improvement of the service it offers to schools through a number of means. Resources from all providers are audited and evaluated. A panel of practising teachers works closely with FACE to ensure all of its work remains linked to the curriculum and its developments. A review is taking place of the quality and appropriateness of resources produced by educational publishers. In addition, FACE plans to commission research to evaluate the impact of its activities and to make further investigations. These will include comparison of the relative educational value of farm and web-based experiences; and the perceptions of young people about a variety of countryside issues.

Promoting common interests

FACE has the opportunity to promote common interests through its wide network of contacts both regional and national. It is invited to sit on committees and to speak at conferences. FACE hosts meetings and events, makes presentations and provides displays. Through leaflets and brochures, articles and news items and its developing award-winning website FACE plans to widen its area of operation so that all teachers and students have the opportunity to access a full range of information sources.
