HMS COLLINGWOOD ENTERS PLYMOUTH, 1915
Frank Watson Wood (1862-1953). Watercolour signed and dated 1915
With Drake’s Island in the background , COLLINGWOOD (Captain J C Ley RN) is seen here negotiating the narrow channel to the north of Drake’s Island as she picks her way into Plymouth. She was one of the three St Vincent Class dreadnoughts which entered service between March and May 1910, some three years after the world’s prototype – DREADNOUGHT herself – had first commissioned. As with most warships of her generation the signing of the Washington Treaty spelled her premature end and she was sold for scrap in December 1922.
