Alpacas

There are two types of alpaca - the Suri with long silken locks that will be on show on the first two days and the Huacaya, which make up the majority of British alpacas, which will be shown on Friday and Saturday.

Alpacas were first introduced into Great Britain in commercial numbers 12 years ago and since then their popularity has ensured that their numbers have rapidly grown to in excess of 20,000 animals with over 1200 alpaca owners in the UK. Alpacas are primarily fibre producing animals which equates very favourably to cashmere, and are sheared once a year to produce up to 5-6 kilos of fibre.
